Verve Photo

One request: Don’t think of photojournalists as a bunch of Dennis Hoppers from “Apocalypse Now,” obsessed with their egotistical conquest of absolute truth through photography. Typically, they’re more like the people at Verve Photo: a combination of artist and journalist. Think the Gay Taleses of photography. Verve Photo calls itself “a reminder of the power of the still image.” The site links to each of its photographers’ personal websites, making Verve Photo sort of the not-so-secret tree house for a large group of artists. The blog showcases a series of images, each captioned with a photographer bio and an explanation of what’s taking place in the photo. You will likely feel the same way about these photographs as you did about Talese’s written portrait of Sinatra: how breakable and vulnerable the subject, how powerful and permanent the image.
