Twitter Tip: Keep it balanced

It’s always fun to be popular, but it’s possible to be too popular, especially on Twitter. If you have 1,000 followers, but you don’t follow anyone in return, it’s going to look a little selfish, and people may be less likely to continue following your updates. What’s the point in making a connection online if it’s a one-sided affair? If you expect people to read all of your tweets, they may expect the same in return. Some twitterers make it a rule to follow everyone who follows them, but you don’t have to go that far. On the other hand, it’s also a bad idea to be blatantly unpopular in the world of Twitter; it’s a sign that something’s amiss. What incentive do people have to follow you if you follow hundreds or thousands of people but have very few followers? They may be skeptical and assume you’re a spammer. Try limiting the number of new people you follow during any period of time. Twitter is a two-sided street, so it’s a good idea to maintain a balance between your following and followers counts.
