“Where Men Win Glory”

Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat TillmanThe alleged government cover-up following football star Pat Tillman’s death in 2004 returns to the spotlight with “Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman.” “Into the Wild” author Jon Krakauer probes the character of the patriotic athlete who turned down a 3.6-million-dollar deal with the Arizona Cardinals in favor of joining the ranks of the elite Army Rangers. What followed, however, was a series of fatal disappointments. Tillman, who wanted to fight terrorists, was deployed to Iraq and died shortly afterwards in friendly fire. Krakauer’s book captures, through interviews with friends, family, and fellow soldiers, the real-life heroism of a man who gave up everything to protect his country. The Denver Post calls the book “a tough read”:

[Krakauer] has tackled a task that required the distillation and organization of volumes of disparate information. That he has fielded a coherent narrative is a victory, that he has made it compelling and passionate is a difficult blessing. . .In mining Tillman’s life and death, Krakauer uncovers a story much more compelling than anything that could be spun.
