Twitter How-to: Use direct messages

When you want to tweet directly to another twitterer, a direct message (or DM) is the way to go. Located in the right-hand column of a user’s profile, the “message” button takes you to the DM dialogue, where you type your private message to a specific user. But remember, direct messages operate under the same 140-character limit that ordinary tweets do, so they’re not much better suited for wordy conversations. You can also type “d (username) (message)” (as in “d web100 Maybe you should add me to your Worth Following category”) to send a direct message straight from the text box at the top of your homepage to conserve mouse clicks.
