Twitter Lingo: Friend

A noun meaning: Someone on Twitter whom you follow and who also follows you. Use: “I’m picky about who I become friends with on Twitter.” The term “friend” might be thrown around loosely in real life, but it’s no laughing matter on Twitter. It’s slightly complicated, but in order to be considered someone’s friend, you’ve got to have a two-way relationship; you have to follow them and they have to follow you. It’s not enough to call yourself someone’s friend if you’re simply following someone. They have to follow you back. So even if you’re following 1,000 people and 1,000 people are following you, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have 1,000 Twitter friends, unless those 1,000 you’re following are also following you. Sites like FriendOrFollow.com can help you sort everyone out and figure out who your real friends are.
