In the face of iTunes’ market dominance of legal downloads, competitors need to find new ways of selling music. Of course, they do not only need to beat the omnipresent Apple, but illegal downloading as well. Amazon has come across a way of doing this by creating a Twitter feed for their MP3 service. All of their tweets tell you about fresh deals they are offering—usually a new promo every day. Amazon also offers occasional “special treats” in the form of free downloads. Indeed, it was the offer of a free Sub Pop sampler that enticed me into using the service for the first time. It is sometimes difficult to create excitement for downloads in the same way as a physical purchase, but Amazon has made some headway into doing so here.
