Touted as the Sundance for independent game developers, the Independent Games Festival awards fat cash prizes and major exposure on the show floor of the Annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The perfect place to debut your experimental opus, the IGF Pavilion showcases every finalist’s entry in playable form—judges and spectators alike can pass an afternoon colonizing asteroid belts, sparing with alien armadas, or just sorting out a couple of temporal anomalies that have reversed the flow of time. The development teams for each entry are on hand to demo their work and press the flesh with top game publishers and distributors. Entrants are also free to sit in on the Independent Games Summit discussion, where topics range from distribution methods to design topics and guerrilla marketing. Luckily, you don’t have to book a flight to catch the showdown, as all that digital triumph and tragedy is now available for online viewing.
